Aims

To familiarise construction personnel with the principles of taking off, recording dimensions and the presentation of bills of quantities. This course is designed for those with little or no experience in the use of SMM.

• The weighted technique for average ground levels
• Interpolation of cut and fill lines
• What to measure
• Entries to dimension paper
• Development of descriptions
• Taking off
• Billing measured items in SMM format.

The measurement exercises are supported by computer generated images of the building and a computer generated walkthrough of the building to be measured. Delegate workbooks supplied for the various exercises can be retained by the delegate.

Teaching Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, the delegates should be able to:

• Define certain standard terminology associated with excavation works and understand its relevance to the measurement process
• Identify correct measurement technique
• Interpolate the position of cut and fill lines
• Produce centreline girths for trenches and walls
• Enter quantities on dimension paper
• Use SMM7 for the development of measurement descriptions
• Produce typical bill entries for a bill of quantities
• Be able to put work items in tabular form
